Florida State University Undergraduate Research Symposium
April 6, 2010, Student Services Building, 2nd floor, 10am – 2 pm
The Tenth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium is a showcase for undergraduate student researchers to present their work to the university community. The symposium is an interdisciplinary event that welcomes research and creative activities from across campus. Students are invited to present their honors thesis work, the results of their directed individual studies, and any other research or creative endeavor that they have done under the direction of a faculty member. This symposium supports completed projects and research and/or creative works in progress. We encourage students who have not yet completed their research to submit an abstract as this is an excellent opportunity for feedback from faculty and peers.
PRESENTATION FORMATS
• Oral Presentations should be 12 minutes in length. If you have a PowerPoint presentation, you will be asked to submit your presentation via e-mail to the Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors prior to arriving at the conference. A question and answer session will follow each presentation.
• Poster Presentations must be no larger than 3ft x 4ft, oriented either horizontally or vertically, on an easel that will be provided for you.
To present at the Undergraduate Research Symposium please submit an abstract (300 words or less) with your name, project title, presentation format, major, faculty mentor and faculty mentor’s email address to ktmoore@fsu.edu with ABSTRACT in all capital letters in the subject line.
Abstracts are due January 29, 2010.
ACC Meeting of the Minds Conference
Each spring, the ACC Meeting of the minds conference provides the opportunity for Florida State students to present their research to students and faculty from around the Atlantic Coast Conference. The conference welcomes research from every discipline, therefore participating by either presenting or attending is a great opportunity to see the types of research being done in all disciplines from around the conference. The office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors will cover expenses associated with attending this conference for students selected to present their research.
The fifth annual ACC Meeting of the Minds Undergraduate Research Conference will be hosted by Georgia Tech’s Global Learning Center on April 16-17, 2010. http://www.accconf2010.gatech.edu/

Tri-Beta Biological Honor Society Poster Competition
Every fall semester, Tri-Beta has a poster competition open to all students in the natural sciences. The Tribeta Biological Honor Society Fifth Annual Poster Competition Day will be held on Feb 18 in the King Entry Hall. Details of the competition follow. It is a wonderful way to highlight your work to the faculty and your scientific community here at FSU.
Eligibility: Although our focus as a national biological honor society is research in the biological sciences, this competition is open to ALL science majors at FSU that are working as undergraduate researchers. Researchers can be volunteers, DIS students, or honor thesis students at the undergraduate level.
When: Abstracts are due on Friday the 29th of January by 5 pm. They should be dual submitted to Dr. Anne Thistle and Ms. Katie Tieman using the following two addresses: thistle@bio.fsu.edu and mkt06d@fsu.edu. The competition is Thursday the 18 February where students will be expected to orally present their poster for one to two hour interval during the day.
Awards: Students will be evaluated based upon the clarity of their poster board, the content of their research, the novelty of their hypothesis, their ability to communicate their findings, and their knowledge of their research area. First place award will be travel expenses to the National BBB Convention to present their research in Durango Colorado in May 18-23, 2010. Second place award will be payment of fees for one graduate school or preprofessional school application (med, dent, vet). Third place award will be a year long subscription to Scientific American.
Details of Abstract Submission: Please include the following information as a single electronic submission to both Dr. Thistle and Ms. Tieman (emails above) by the deadline:
- Format: Use Times Roman 11 pt. single space.
- Submission should be as a *.doc or *.docx file (Microsoft Office Word) or a *.rtf (rich text file generated from any word processing program).
- Title of Research
- Authors (UG presenting author should be first, home laboratory should be last) and Affiliations.
- 1800 word abstract - to include -single introductory sentence of your broad topic and its significance, hypothesis sentence, method sentence (approach and/or species), several sentences of results, single recapitulation of impact of your findings/conclusion), funding source line.
- Your home laboratory and department.
- Your available hours on 18 Feb, Thursday for the competition.
- Your gpa and availability to participate in national competition in May, if selected.
